Technically, the membrane would do just fine as a standalone material, but to increase its lifespan (and to have peace of mind), 2 additional layers are added. The exterior, a high-quality, water-repellent silk cotton from TSL Textile not only meets the current standards of protection from droplets (coughs), it is also anti-microbial and meets the required hospital-grade standards for bedsheets.
Lastly, the interior’s fabric is what the textile industry calls it nano zinc oxide by Perma™ — soft and comfortable on the skin, the wearer can take comfort in knowing that it prevents 99.9% bacterial growth. This also means no more containment of odor inside the mask (from perspiration and/or respiration); in other words, oderless.
Altogether, the Āerde Mask can easily retain 99% efficiency at 2.5 micron size range (PM2.5) after 30 gentle washes — at the very least.

Respilon’s nanofiber membrane contains an extremely dense network of fibres that are about 1,000 times smaller in diameter than a human hair. These fibres are extremely strong and can stop even the smallest solid and liquid particles. It also doesn’t suffer filtration loss due to humidity from wearers’ breath (unlike most other available FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3 rated PPE).
Other widely available filtered face masks (such as N95) rely on electrostatic filtration. After 25 minutes of use, the increased humidity from a wearers’ breath enacts a process called IPA soaking, which inhibits the electrostatic process causing the filter to lose 60% of its original filtration efficiency. However, Respilon’s actually reach optimum performance in humid conditions, which makes it perfect for professional use where a mask wearer needs consistent protection and performance.
